I am Math Meertens, a photographer based in the Netherlands.

Photography, for me, is not a way of collecting the world, but of reducing it. I am not interested in abundance, but in concentration: images in which form, silence, light and space come together into something that goes beyond description. My work moves between architecture, places, long exposure and the human body, yet the underlying search remains the same: to make an image that does not merely show, but holds.

What draws me is not the spectacular or the anecdotal, but the tension that appears when an image is reduced to its essence. A building can become a sculpture, a landscape a mental space, a body a vessel of silence, vulnerability or strength. Across all of my work, I look for formal clarity, reduction and a sense of concentrated estrangement.

Black and white plays an important role in this. Not as a style in itself, but as a way of removing noise and revealing the underlying structure of an image. Tonality, shadow, rhythm and negative space are not finishing touches to me; they are part of the construction of the image itself.

My photography grows out of careful looking, critical selection and the desire to keep only what truly endures. An image does not need to say much, as long as it continues to resonate.
